Fluxome Sciences attracts DKK 100 million

(23.7.2008) Fluxome Sciences announces today that it has attracted third round of capital funding, enabling the company to pursue further "high effectiveness, low cost " development of its nutraceutical ingredient Resveratrol - a natural antioxidant known from the skin of red grapes and in red wine.

Behind the investment are the existing investors including the French investor group Seventure and one new investor, the Belgian Capricorn Cleantech Fund. The international investor group has high expectations to Fluxomes' proprietary technology, as there is comprehensive medical research to imply substantial benefits from the use of Resveratrol in several therapeutic areas. Amongst others there is evidence that Resveratrol can intensify an induced cell death, called apoptosis which is an important goal in cancer therapy.

The nutraceutical ingredient Resveratrol has already shown anti-aging properties, cancer preventive activity as well as cardiovascular protective effect.

The increased level of scientific studies supporting the health benefits of Resveratrol show that the ingredient has the potential of becoming a new 'blockbuster' health ingredient. Annual growth rates are currently predicted to exceed 30-40 %.

Resveratrol has potent antifungal properties, and is produced in a number of plant species as a defence against fungal infections. The primary, commercial natural sources of Resveratrol are red grape skin extracts and extracts from Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum). For centuries the root of Japanese Knotweed has been used extensively in the Far East as herbal medicine.

Fluxome Science is the first biotech company to enhance the effective antioxidant through laboratory regulated fermentation with high scalability. The fermentation process ensures a pure product in the form of a white, crystalline powder.

This circumstance makes it very suitable for tablet and capsule formulation and because of its known effects as herbal medicine, time to market as enhanced food product is far shorter than for normal therapeutic entities developed in the pharmaceutical industry. With its nutraceutical ingredient Resveratrol, Fluxome Sciences expects to open for a wider use e.g. as a functional food, cosmetics, and as a pharmaceutical ingredient within a few years.
